6 καὶ προσήλθοσαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ιουδα πρὸς Ἰησοῦν ἐν Γαλγαλ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Χαλεβ ὁ τοῦ Ιεφοννη ὁ Κενεζαῖος σὺ ἐπίστῃ τὸ ῥῆμα ὃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἄνθρωπον τοῦ θεοῦ περὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ ἐν Καδης Βαρνη 7 τεσσαράκοντα γὰρ ἐτῶν ἤμην ὅτε ἀπέστειλέν με Μωυσῆς ὁ παῖς τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκ Καδης Βαρνη κατασκοπεῦσαι τὴν γῆν καὶ ἀπεκρίθην αὐτῷ λόγον κατὰ τὸν νοῦν αὐτοῦ 8 οἱ δὲ ἀδελφοί μου οἱ ἀναβάντες με{T'} ἐμοῦ μετέστησαν τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ λαοῦ ἐγὼ δὲ προσετέθην ἐπακολουθῆσαι κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ μου 9 καὶ ὤμοσεν Μωυσῆς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ λέγων ἡ γῆ ἐ{F'} ἣν ἐπέβης σοὶ ἔσται ἐν κλήρῳ καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ὅτι προσετέθης ἐπακολουθῆσαι ὀπίσω κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν 10 καὶ νῦν διέθρεψέν με κύριος ὃν τρόπον εἶπεν τοῦτο τεσσαρακοστὸν καὶ πέμπτον ἔτος ἀ{F'} οὗ ἐλάλησεν κύριος τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ σήμερον ὀγδοήκοντα καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν 11 ἔτι εἰμὶ σήμερον ἰσχύων ὡσεὶ ὅτε ἀπέστειλέν με Μωυσῆς ὡσαύτως ἰσχύω νῦν ἐξελθεῖν καὶ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν πόλεμον 12 καὶ νῦν αἰτοῦμαί σε τὸ ὄρος τοῦτο καθὰ εἶπεν κύριος τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ὅτι σὺ ἀκήκοας τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ νυνὶ δὲ οἱ Ενακιμ ἐκεῖ εἰσιν πόλεις ὀχυραὶ καὶ μεγάλαι ἐὰν οὖν κύριος με{T'} ἐμοῦ ᾖ ἐξολεθρεύσω αὐτούς ὃν τρόπον εἶπέν μοι κύριος 13 καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔδωκεν τὴν Χεβρων τῷ Χαλεβ υἱῷ Ιεφοννη υἱοῦ Κενεζ ἐν κλήρῳ 14 διὰ τοῦτο ἐγενήθη ἡ Χεβρων τῷ Χαλεβ τῷ τοῦ Ιεφοννη τοῦ Κενεζαίου ἐν κλήρῳ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης διὰ τὸ αὐτὸν ἐπακολουθῆσαι τῷ προστάγματι κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ 15 τὸ δὲ ὄνομα τῆς Χεβρων ἦν τὸ πρότερον πόλις Αρβοκ μητρόπολις τῶν Ενακιμ αὕτη καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐκόπασεν τοῦ πολέμου

6 So it was that the descendants of Juda appeared before Josue in Galgala. And now Caleb, son of Jephone, the Cenezite, spoke thus to him: Thou hast not forgotten the divine promise that was made to God’s servant Moses at Cades-Barne, concerning us two. 7 I was then forty years old, and he had sent me from Cades-Barne to view the land; I brought back with me an honest report, 8 and although my fellow-spies tried to daunt the spirits of the people, I took, none the less, the part of the Lord my God. 9 And Moses promised me that day, Thou, who hast taken the part of the Lord my God, shalt live to have a portion in the very land thou hast traversed, and leave it to thy race in perpetuity. 10 The Lord has made good his promise, and life is still mine. That word was spoken to Moses forty-five years since, when Israel began its wanderings up and down the desert, and now, a man eighty-five years old, 11 I am as vigorous as I was when I went on that errand; in battle or on the march, the strength of old days is still with me. 12 Give me, now, that hill-country which the Lord promised me in thy own hearing; there are Enacim living on it,[1] in strong, walled cities, and I would fain see if I cannot drive them out, with the Lord at my side, and claim his promise. 13 So Josue blessed him, and gave him Hebron for his portion; 14 ever since then, Hebron has belonged to the family of Caleb, son of Jephone, the Cenezite, the man who took the Lord’s part. 15 (Hebron, in earlier days, was called Cariath-Arbe, after the great father of the race.[2]) And once more the land was at peace.

6 Accesserunt itaque filii Juda ad Josue in Galgala, locutusque est ad eum Caleb filius Jephone Cenezæus: Nosti quid locutus sit Dominus ad Moysen hominem Dei de me et te in Cadesbarne. 7 Quadraginta annorum eram quando misit me Moyses famulus Domini de Cadesbarne, ut considerarem terram, nuntiavique ei quod mihi verum videbatur. 8 Fratres autem mei, qui ascenderant mecum, dissolverunt cor populi: et nihilominus ego secutus sum Dominum Deum meum. 9 Juravitque Moyses in die illo, dicens: Terra, quam calcavit pes tuus, erit possessio tua, et filiorum tuorum in æternum: quia secutus es Dominum Deum meum. 10 Concessit ergo Dominus vitam mihi, sicut pollicitus est, usque in præsentem diem. Quadraginta et quinque anni sunt, ex quo locutus est Dominus verbum istud ad Moysen, quando ambulabat Israël per solitudinem: hodie octoginta quinque annorum sum, 11 sic valens ut eo valebam tempore quando ad explorandum missus sum: illius in me temporis fortitudo usque hodie perseverat, tam ad bellandum quam ad gradiendum. 12 Da ergo mihi montem istum, quem pollicitus est Dominus, te quoque audiente, in quo Enacim sunt, et urbes magnæ atque munitæ: si forte sit Dominus mecum, et potuero delere eos, sicut promisit mihi. 13 Benedixitque ei Josue, et tradidit ei Hebron in possessionem: 14 atque ex eo fuit Hebron Caleb filio Jephone Cenezæo usque in præsentem diem, quia secutus est Dominum Deum Israël. 15 Nomen Hebron ante vocabatur Cariath Arbe: Adam maximus ibi inter Enacim situs est: et terra cessavit a præliis.

[1] ‘In thy own hearing; there are Enacim living on it’; the Hebrew text is interpreted by some as meaning ‘Thou hast heard that there are Enacim living on it’.

[2] ‘After the great father of the race’; according to the usual interpretation of the Hebrew text, this should mean Arbe, father of Enac (cf. 15.13). St Jerome, however, supposes a popular belief that not only Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (cf. Gen. 35.27) but also Adam had been buried there, whence it was called ‘the City of the Four Men’; and this appears to be the sense intended by the Latin version, ‘there among the Enacim the great Adam is placed’. The last eight words of the verse, if they are in their right place here, seem to refer by anticipation to the events narrated in 15.14 below.
