16 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων 17 εἰπὸν Ααρων ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τοῦ γένους σου εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν τίνι ἐὰν ᾖ ἐν αὐτῷ μῶμος οὐ προσελεύσεται προσφέρειν τὰ δῶρα τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ 18 πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ᾧ ἂν ᾖ ἐν αὐτῷ μῶμος οὐ προσελεύσεται ἄνθρωπος χωλὸς ἢ τυφλὸς ἢ κολοβόρριν ἢ ὠτότμητος 19 ἢ ἄνθρωπος ᾧ ἐστιν ἐν αὐτῷ σύντριμμα χειρὸς ἢ σύντριμμα ποδός 20 ἢ κυρτὸς ἢ ἔφηλος ἢ πτίλος τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἢ ἄνθρωπος ᾧ ἂν ᾖ ἐν αὐτῷ ψώρα ἀγρία ἢ λιχήν ἢ μόνορχις 21 πᾶς ᾧ ἐστιν ἐν αὐτῷ μῶμος ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Ααρων τοῦ ἱερέως οὐκ ἐγγιεῖ τοῦ προσενεγκεῖν τὰς θυσίας τῷ θεῷ σου ὅτι μῶμος ἐν αὐτῷ τὰ δῶρα τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ προσελεύσεται προσενεγκεῖν 22 τὰ δῶρα τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁγίων φάγεται 23 πλὴν πρὸς τὸ καταπέτασμα οὐ προσελεύσεται καὶ πρὸς τὸ θυσιαστήριον οὐκ ἐγγιεῖ ὅτι μῶμον ἔχει καὶ οὐ βεβηλώσει τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ὁ ἁγιάζων αὐτούς

16 The Lord, too, spoke to Moses, 17 bidding him tell Aaron: No descendant of thine that has any blemish shall be allowed to offer his God the consecrated loaves, 18 nor to come forward and do him service. Such are the blind, the lame, one whose nose is deformed in size or twisted awry,[4] 19 one who has a crushed hand or foot, 20 is hunch-backed or blear-eyed,[5] or wall-eyed, has a continual scab or itch on him, or a rupture. 21 No one of the priestly line of Aaron who has such a blemish must come forward to sacrifice to the Lord, or offer his God the consecrated loaves. 22 He is allowed to eat the bread which is offered in the sanctuary, 23 but he must have no access to the veil,[6] must not go near the altar; my sanctuary must not be profaned by any blemish. I, the Lord, have set priests apart for myself.

16 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 17 Loquere ad Aaron: Homo de semine tuo per familias qui habuerit maculam, non offeret panes Deo suo, 18 nec accedet ad ministerium ejus: si cæcus fuerit, si claudus, si parvo vel grandi, vel torto naso, 19 si fracto pede, si manu, 20 si gibbus, si lippus, si albuginem habens in oculo, si jugem scabiem, si impetiginem in corpore, vel herniosus. 21 Omnis qui habuerit maculam de semine Aaron sacerdotis, non accedet offerre hostias Domino, nec panes Deo suo: 22 vescetur tamen panibus qui offeruntur in sanctuario, 23 ita dumtaxat, ut intra velum non ingrediatur, nec accedat ad altare, quia maculam habet, et contaminare non debet sanctuarium meum. Ego Dominus qui sanctifico eos.

[1] The sense of this verse in the Hebrew text is uncertain.

[2] According to the Hebrew text, ‘offerings’. In this chapter, by a metaphor, the priests seem to be thought of as servants waiting at their master’s table.

[3] Literally, ‘his own people’, but the context seems to indicate that the Latin version uses the word here in a restricted sense. The Hebrew text has simply ‘She must be a virgin, of his own people, and he must not dishonour his race among his people’.

[4] The Hebrew text is generally understood as meaning ‘one who is mutilated (probably in the face) or has an over-developed limb’.

[5] The word in the Hebrew text seems to mean ‘withered’.

[6] Literally, according to the Latin text, ‘go within the veil’, but this was in any case forbidden to all except the high priest (Heb. 9.7). The Hebrew text has ‘come up to the veil’ (cf. 4.6 above).
