22 ἵνα τί κύριε ἀφέστηκας μακρόθεν ὑπερορᾷς ἐν εὐκαιρίαις ἐν θλίψει 23 ἐν τῷ ὑπερηφανεύεσθαι τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἐμπυρίζεται ὁ πτωχός συλλαμβάνονται ἐν διαβουλίοις οἷς διαλογίζονται 24 ὅτι ἐπαινεῖται ὁ ἁμαρτωλὸς ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ ἀδικῶν ἐνευλογεῖται 25 παρώξυνεν τὸν κύριον ὁ ἁμαρτωλός κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῆς ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐκζητήσει οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ θεὸς ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ 26 βεβηλοῦνται αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ἀνταναιρεῖται τὰ κρίματά σου ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτοῦ κατακυριεύσει 27 εἶπεν γὰρ ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ σαλευθῶ ἀπὸ γενεᾶς εἰς γενεὰν ἄνευ κακοῦ 28 οὗ ἀρᾶς τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ γέμει καὶ πικρίας καὶ δόλου ὑπὸ τὴν γλῶσσαν αὐτοῦ κόπος καὶ πόνος 29 ἐγκάθηται ἐνέδρᾳ μετὰ πλουσίων ἐν ἀποκρύφοις ἀποκτεῖναι ἀθῷον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν πένητα ἀποβλέπουσιν 30 ἐνεδρεύει ἐν ἀποκρύφῳ ὡς λέων ἐν τῇ μάνδρᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐνεδρεύει τοῦ ἁρπάσαι πτωχόν ἁρπάσαι πτωχὸν ἐν τῷ ἑλκύσαι αὐτόν 31 ἐν τῇ παγίδι αὐτοῦ ταπεινώσει αὐτόν κύψει καὶ πεσεῖται ἐν τῷ αὐτὸν κατακυριεῦσαι τῶν πενήτων 32 εἶπεν γὰρ ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐπιλέλησται ὁ θεός ἀπέστρεψεν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ βλέπειν εἰς τέλος

22 Lord,[1] why dost thou stand far off? In days of affliction, why dost thou make no sign? 23 The hearts of the oppressed burn within them, so triumphant is the schemer that has entrapped them; 24 so proud of his wicked end achieved, still robbing men, blaspheming and despising the Lord. 25 God there is none to punish me, the sinner thinks in his pride, and makes that thought his rule; 26 still, as he goes on prospering, he banishes thy laws from his mind, and makes light of his enemies. 27 Endless time, he thinks, cannot shake his untroubled existence. 28 His mouth overflows with curses, and calumny, and deceit; his tongue is a storehouse of dissension and mischief. 29 Ambushed he lies at the village gate, to kill unawares the man who never wronged him; 30 his eyes are continually on his prey; like a lion in its lair, he watches from his hiding-place, to surprise his defenceless foe, safe in the net. 31 So he catches him in the toils; stands there bowing and scraping,[2] till the prey falls by his onset. 32 Why not? he thinks to himself, God has forgotten about it; God still turns his face away, and sees nothing.

Ut quid, Domine, recessisti longe;
despicis in opportunitatibus, in tribulatione? 23
Dum superbit impius, incenditur pauper:
comprehenduntur in consiliis quibus cogitant. 24
Quoniam laudatur peccator in desideriis animæ suæ,
et iniquus benedicitur. 25
Exacerbavit Dominum peccator:
secundum multitudinem iræ suæ, non quæret. 26
Non est Deus in conspectu ejus;
inquinatæ sunt viæ illius in omni tempore.
Auferuntur judicia tua a facie ejus;
omnium inimicorum suorum dominabitur. 27
Dixit enim in corde suo: Non movebor
a generatione in generationem, sine malo. 28
Cujus maledictione os plenum est, et amaritudine, et dolo;
sub lingua ejus labor et dolor. 29
Sedet in insidiis cum divitibus in occultis,
ut interficiat innocentem. 30
Oculi ejus in pauperem respiciunt;
insidiatur in abscondito, quasi leo in spelunca sua.
Insidiatur ut rapiat pauperem;
rapere pauperem dum attrahit eum. 31
In laqueo suo humiliabit eum;
inclinabit se, et cadet cum dominatus fuerit pauperum. 32
Dixit enim in corde suo: Oblitus est Deus;
avertit faciem suam, ne videat in finem.

[1] The numbering of the Psalms here corresponds with that of the Vulgate. In the Hebrew text, which is followed by some modern versions, verses 22-39 of this Psalm are treated as a separate psalm and numbered 10; while Psalms 146 and 147 are given as one psalm. Thus the Vulgate numbers 10 to 147 correspond to 11-147 of the alternative reckoning.

[2] v. 31. This seems the most natural way of taking a much-disputed sentence.
