The highway even shared about 1/2 mile with its parent, U.S. 69. Commissioned in December 2002, OK 69A was still signed as Alternate U.S. 69 in some places, especially around the Quapaw area. Sometime between 2003 and May 2005, OK 69A's northern end was truncated back to U.S. 69, and Alternate U.S. 69 shields reappeared.
