Def Leppard began its formation in 1977 in the UK as 'Atomic Mass' with Rick Savage on bass, Pete Willis on guitar, Steve Clark on guitar, Tony Kenning on drums, and Joe Elliott on vocals. In 1978, the band officially named themselves 'Def Leppard' and replaced Kenning with Frank Noon (to record The Def Leppard EP) and then Rick Allen on drums (only 15 at the time). In 1979, Def Leppard signed a recording deal and toured in support of Sammy Hagar and AC/DC.

Def Leppard released On Through The Night with their first single "Hello America."

Def Leppard released High 'N Dry.

Guitarist Pete Willis left the group and replaced with Phil Collen.

High 'N Dry was certified gold.

Tragedy struck the group when drummer Rick Allen was involved in a major New Year's Eve auto accident that resulted in the loss of his left arm. Allen continued with the band after recovery, adapting to playing the drums with one arm.
