The conception of the post-punk, New Wave-sounding Police began in 1977 when Copeland began the trio along with Sting and guitarist Henri Padovani in England. Summers soon joined the trio and a few months later Padovani left leaving the Police as a trio and releasing their first single "Fall Out." November 2: Outlandos d'Amour was released with the single "Roxanne." The LP was slow to get the band noticed but the Police continued with performances in the UK and the US throughout the year. "Roxanne" eventually the Top 20 in the UK and the Top 40 in the US, and the Police toured the UK. September 29: The Police topped the UK singles chart for 3 weeks with "Message In A Bottle." October 1: The Police released Reggatta de Blanc. October 13: The Police topped the UK LP chart for 4 weeks with Reggatta de Blanc. December 8: The Police topped the UK singles chart for 1 week with "Walking On The Moon." September 27: The Police topped the UK singles chart for 4 weeks with "Don't Stand So Close To Me."
