Shaggy was born Orville Richard Burrell in Jamaica on October 22, 1968. He stayed in Jamaica as a youth and eventually moved to New York in his late teens and fought in the Gulf War. The name Shaggy came early on after his friends nicknamed him after the Scooby Doo cartoon character. By the time Shaggy hit New York his ambition for a musical career was in full-swing and Shaggy had local success with the dance track "Big Up" and "Mampie."
Shaggy released Pure Pleasure and the track "Oh Carolina" became a huge hit in England and several other countries. Shaggy had recorded the track while in the military stationed in North Carolina.
Shaggy released Original Doberman.

Shaggy hit the Top 40 with "Boombastic."
Shaggy topped the Billboard R&B Singles chart for a week and the R&B Singles Sales chart for a week with "Boombastic/Summer Time."
Shaggy released Boombastic and found his success crossover to the U.S. Boombastic eventually topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart for 52 weeks.
The single "Boombastic" was certified platinum.
Shaggy hit the Top 10 with "Boombastic."
Shaggy topped the Billboard Singles Sales chart for 2 weeks and the Hot Rap Singles chart for a week with "Boombastic/Summer Time."
Boombastic was certified gold.
Shaggy topped the UK Singles chart for a week with "Boombastic."
Shaggy toured Europe with his opening act - the Backstreet Boys.
Shaggy topped the Billboard Year-End Chart-Toppers as the Top Reggae Artist and Top Reggae Album (Boombastic).

Shaggy won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album (Boombastic).
Shaggy hit the Top 40 helping out Maxi Priest with "That Girl."
Shaggy hit the Top 10 with "That Girl."

Shaggy released Midnite Lover. The LP wasn't a big commercial success and eventually led his record label to drop him.

"It Wasn't Me" (featuring Ricardo "Rikrok" Ducent) hit the Top 40. The success of "It Wasn't Me" started when a DJ in Hawaii downloaded the track from Napster and began playing it frequently - and gradually the song spread.
Shaggy hit the Top 10 with "It Wasn't Me."

Hotshot was certified 3x platinum.
