Rock On The Net: Smashing Pumpkins (original) (raw)
Smashing Pumpkins was formed in Chicago in 1989 as a three man, one woman group: Billy Corgan (singer/guitarist), James Iha (guitar), D'arcy Wretzky-Brown (bass), and Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). Over the course of 6 six years, they have become one of the leading alternative bands in the US and world-wide. Billy Corgan left Chicago for Florida when he was 19 to work with his band at that time, the Marked.
After the band got nowhere in Florida, Corgan returned to Chicago where he met James Iha and began collaborating. When D'arcy Wretzky joined Corgan and Iha (after meeting at a Dan Reed Network concert), they began calling themselves the Smashing Pumpkins. As the band began to get noticed in the Chicago area and opening for Jane's Addiction, they permanently hired Jimmy Chamberlain as their drummer.
More local success was found with the release of their single "I Am One" and subsequent release of Tristessa.
The Smashing Pumpkins were signed with Virgin Records, and their LP Gish was released (and re-issued in 1994). Gishsold over 400,000 copies but success was tempered with the release of Nirvana's Nevermind, which claimed the title of "hot alternative release." However, Spin magazine called Gish, "...the debut album of the year" in 1991.Also released was the EP, Lull which contained 4 songs recorded in 1989. The band also toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers during the year.
The band could be heard on the soundtrack to the film Singles ("Drown").
After a few years of depression (Corgan), relationship breakups (Iha and D'arcy), drugs (Chamberlain), the Smashing Pumpkins released Siamese Dream. The LP was a major hit with critics and music fans with such tracks as "Cherub Rock," "Disarm," and "Today" being played on modern rock stations and video channels.

I've been watchin' people like you sluggin' around other people for seven years. And you know what? It's the same s---. I wish you'd understand that in an environment like this, and in a setting like this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to the rest of the people around you. I, and we, publicly take a stand against moshing!"

The lawsuit claimed that the other band members failed to make certain Melvoin stayed off drugs and therefore contributed to his death. Chamberlain also pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct which allowed him to avoid jail time if he completed a drug rehabilitation program. D'arcy described the incident as "...was like a slap in the face. A big reality check. We had this incredible realization that we shouldn't be taking things for granted." She further stated that Chamberlain's drug use "...went on in secret behind our backs. We had already fired Jonathan. He came back crying, and begged for a second chance to prove himself. As far as we knew, he was clean. We liked him a lot, he was a very sweet guy, and we hired him back...We were very angry. We deserved a chance to try and felt we shouldn't be punished for his stupidity."

It's just that, I guess people have this image of me with the glammy make-up and big hair and they just expect, like, heavy metal or something."

Some of the profits from the Pumpkin's summer tour will be going to charities. Corgan stated, "There's a common feeling that the world is falling apart, and we're one of the bands of our generation accused of playing into that nihilism... I'm sick of being accused of feeding into that... as a band we've achieved our wildest dreams. What's important now is putting our values ahead of our pockets."
The Smashing Pumpkins released Adore. The band used several drummers including Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and Joey Waronker, from Beck's camp. Corgan said this about Adore's sound on MTV: "I think people are going to be surprised by the kind of reversal in a lot of ways, but the people that say it's acoustic will be wrong. The people that say it's electronic will be wrong. The people that say it's a Pumpkin's record will be wrong."

The Pumpkins opportunity seemed like a perfect musical thing. More than anything it's where my bass told me to go. I needed to play this rock music." Corgan said of MACHINA / the machines of God: "(it) won't suit everyone's taste. As I like to say, if everybody likes what you're doing, you're doing something wrong."

Word came that the band was breaking up - the group will break up after a string of concert appearances around the world. Corgan told a radio station that another LP of unreleased material as well as live recordings could be released in the future. He stated: "We thought about telling people right when (MACHINA / the machines of God) was going to come out, but then we thought it would be all about that and not about the music. But now that the album is out, it's fine. We wanted to make one more album to leave things on a positive note... It is a weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I've been walking around with this weird secret. I think deep down our fans knew that this was the end. If you really listen to the album, it's in the album. We brought this thing to what we felt was a really strong conclusion and it freed us to enjoy it."
