Light pulses can have a range of properties. This article presents a brief overview:
| Property | Symbol | Units | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | ($\delta\nu$) | Hz | the optical bandwidth of a pulse |
| Carrier–envelope offset | ($\varphi_{\rm ceo}$) | rad | the offset between the optical phase and the maximum of the wave envelope of an optical pulse |
| Chirp | Hz/s | time dependence of the instantaneous frequency of an optical pulse | |
| Pulse duration | ($\tau_{\rm p}$) | s | the duration of an optical pulse |
| Pulse front tilt | ° | the phenomenon that the arrival time of an ultrashort pulse varies across the beam profile | |
| Pulse energy | ($E_{\rm p}$) | J | the energy of an optical pulse |
| Pulse repetition rate | ($f_{\rm rep}$) | Hz | the number of pulses emitted per second e.g. by a mode-locked or Q-switched laser |
| Spectral phase | ($\\varphi$) | rad | the phase of the electric field in the frequency domain |
As pulses are often delivered as light beams, various beam properties can also be relevant.
