Introduction

Like most continental sides, the Netherlands only played against the England Amateur team until the first World War. That team contained a number of players who were active in the professional league (without being paid of course), such as the famousVivian Woodward, who not only played 30 matches (46 goals) for the England Amateur team, but also 23 matches (29 goals) for the full England team.
While these matches do not show in the official English statistics, the European federations involved do include them in their official records, the England Amateur team usually being the strongest opponents they ever played during that time. Positive results against this England Amateur team were few and far between for continental sides (France alone managed to suffer three double digit thrashings within less than three years and the Netherlands also suffered their three highest ever defeats (2-12, 1-9 and 1-8 respectively) all against the England Amateur team in little over 30 months), and the 2-1 win at _Houtrust_in March 1913, thanks to two goals byHuug de Groot, remained the Dutch team's most famous victory until long after the second World War. The Great Britain sides which the Netherlands played at two Olympic tournaments, both in London, were essentially equivalent to the England Amateur team.

Against the full England side, the Dutch record is much better than against the Amateur team, in particular since the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands in the mid-fifties. Two wins stand out: the first win (out of meanwhile four) in England, at the mythical (old) Wembley stadium in February 1977, thanks to two goals from Jan Peters, and the 3-1 at the 1988 European championship, thanks to a hattrick by Marco van Basten. Of course, the English rather prefer to remember their 4-1 win at the "Football is coming home" Euro in 1996 – the last win by either team when hosting the match, as both failed to do so at the next four opportunities.
