Romania - Record International Players

Chronological List of Matches

Note that 31 matches, all part of the Olympic Games (either as part of the qualifying tournament or the final and consolation tournament in 1964) or (in 4 cases) training matches for the 1964 Olympics, which at the time were considered official international matches for Romania, were deleted from the records on instigation of FIFA; in 7 cases (the two qualifying matches against the Soviet Union for the 1960 Olympics, the match at the 1964 Olympics against Mexico and the qualifying matches against France (2) and the Netherlands (2) for the 1976 Olympics) this was justified as the opponents did not field full teams; in the 24 other cases, both Romania and their opponents appear to have considered the matches in question to be full international matches at the time and the FIFA decision appears highly arbitrary.

Two other matches which were considered official for Romania at the time of playing, in spite of the fact that the opponents fielded substandard teams (in 1980 against Hungary B and in 1984 against Ecuador U-23), were belatedly deleted from the records in 2007.

Moreover, in 2016 the friendly against Belgium played on 14 Nov 2012 was removed, as Romania made 8 substitutions (however, it is considered official by the Belgian FA).

These 34 matches which were deleted from the records are listed in italics. In addition, a number of other unofficial matches are also listed in italics; some of these are (still) recognised as official by the opponents.

Also note that the six matches Romania played as part of the second Central European Amateur Cup held between 1931 and 1934, which was won by Romania, against the Amateur sides of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, remain official for Romania in spite of the fact that the respective opponents do not recognise these matches.

NB: countries indicated as per current borders, so e.g. an away match against Yugoslavia in Zagreb is included under Croatia and Leipzig is included under Germany; one peculiar effect of this is that a home match against Poland in Cernăuți and two away matches against the same country in Lww are all three included under Ukraine.

NB: Romania played about 12 percent more matches away than at home (ignoring matches played at neutral venues, and accounting for contemporary borders, e.g. two matches in Poland at Lww are counted as away matches, just as one match in Beuthen against Germany, while Romania's one match in Cernăuți is included as a home match).

NB: Romania have a rather peculiar record in England: in 4 matches in London, all against England, they never lost (4 draws) while in the other 4 matches they played there (three during Euro 1996, two in Newcastle and one in Leeds, against Bulgaria, France and Spain and one friendly in Middlesbrough) they failed to secure a single point. Travelling to Praha appears hardly worthwhile for the Tricolorii (apart from the sightseeing), while they do well in Poland (Romania played in 8 different currently Polish cities and there is only one where they lost more matches than they won: Bytom, then called Beuthen and part of Nazi Germany, where they lost 0-7 to the hosts in 1942). Romania have a perfect record in Zagreb, Croatia (3 matches, 3 wins) although they only managed one draw from 4 matches against Croatia: all matches in Zagreb involved former Yugoslavia.

Overview of Deleted Olympic Matches

All matches played by Romania as part of the Olympic Games after 1952 (21 matches in the qualifiying stages, 4 matches in the 1964 final tournament, 2 matches in the 1964 consolation tournament in which Romania won fifth place overall, and 4 training matches in 1963 and 1964) were deleted from the records on the insistence of FIFA, although 24 of these 31 matches appear to have been recognised as official by both countries involved at the time of playing.
