Until 1922 there was no automatic promotion and relegation, instead clubs had to apply for election to the First Division. Until 1915 clubs which finished equal on points played off for the

title. In 1910 Leith and Raith Rovers both finished with 33 points but decided not to play-off for the title and were declared joint Champions. In 1915 Cowdenbeath, St. Bernard's and Leith Athletic all finished on 37 points. There was a three way play-off in which Cowdenbeath beat Leith 1-0 and St. Bernard's 3-1 while Leith beat St. Bernard's 2-1. Cowdenbeath were thus declared Champions.

Scottish Football League Division Two Champions 1922-1939

The Second Division closed down at the end of the 1914-15 due to the World War. When the war ended the Scottish League resisted attempts to reform it, but were forced to re-introduce it in 1921, along with automatic promotion and relegation, when the clubs which had been left out formed their own rival league and poached players from the Scottish League.

Scottish Football League 'B' Division/Division Two Champions 1947-75

The 1939-40 season was abandoned when World War II broke out in September 1940 and the Scottish League closed down until 1946. Division Two was called 'B' Division from when the League restarted in 1946 until 1956.

Scottish Football League Division One Champions 1976-2016

The league was re-organised at the end of the 1975-76. The teams finishing in the top ten positions of the old Division One in 1974-75 formed the new Premier Division for season 1975-76. The remaining teams of the old Division One formed the new Division One along with the top six teams from the old Division Two.
