analytical and associative overlay - The Skeptic's Dictionary (original) (raw)

From Abracadabra to Zombies | View All

An alleged phenomenon that occurs during alleged psychic experiences wherein psychic impressions trigger thoughts related to the psychic impressions. This results in extraneous impressions and images being commingled with the psychic ones.

The idea of analytical and associative overlays seems to have been invented to explain why, for example, remote viewers have numerous wrong or seemingly irrelevant impressions. The viewer is describing things he associates with the target rather than the target itself. So, if the viewer seems on target, it's a hit; if he's off target, that's a hit, too.
