Fisk University was established in Nashville, Tennessee in 1866 for former slaves by the American Missionary Association. In 1872 it became the first African American college to receive a class A rating by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Since its conception, Fisk University has established itself as one of the country's leading educational institutions and has trained a large number of important leaders in the civil rights movement.
