Buckskin was the pliable dressed leather of the deer or elk. It is claimed that the name comes from Daniel Boone who sold the skin of the animal for a buck (dollar). Shirts, shoes (moccasins), hats, dresses and trousers were all made of buckskin and they were worn by Native Americans and the settlers in the West.
