Rudolph Carl Bigalke was born on 24 February 1932.
He studied at the Universities of Rhodes (BSc, BSc Hons, UED) and Frankfurt (Dr. phil. nat.). He was Professor of Nature Conservation at the University of Stellenbosch from 1970.

Rudi Bigalke was married to Inge. He died on 28 November 2002.

Awards: Besondere Erepenning vir Wetenskaplike Natuurbewaring 1967

Rudi Bigalke not only left his indelible mark on the conservation landscape, but also on the culture of ethical hunting in southern Africa.
