Marietjie de Jongh was born on 1 March 1953 in Vredenburg and grew up on the Sandveld farm Tzaarskuil. She attended the farm schools on Tzaarskuil, and then on Suurfontein. She obtained her matric at Aurora High in 1970.
Marietjie studied at Stellenbosch University (BA 1973) and at Unisa (BA hons in English,1976), where she later took also Philosophy and History of Art.
She taught classes in Kenhardt, Villiersdorp, Worcester, Richmond in the Karoo and in Somerset-East and is presently teaching at the School for the Blind in Worcester.
