Marié Malherbe, née Leliveld, was born on 18 October 1898 in Hoopstad, Orange Free State.
She attended school at the Oranje Meisieskool in Bloemfontein. She started her studies in 1917 at Stellenbosch University, then Victoria college (B.A. 1919) and took part in the plays offered by the university's Debatsvereniging.
Her Innis series (adventure stories from a girls boarding school) were very popular in the fifties and sixties of the last century. She translated several books, including Pinocchio, into Afrikaans, and was also known for her radio programmes.
Marié Malherbe was an honorary member of the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. She was married to Fransie Malherbe, Professor of Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University and is the mother of Fana Malherbe.
