Amherst, Texas, Lamar County. (original) (raw)

History on a Pinhead
Amherst had a post office in operation from 1904-05 and a school that appeared on maps in 1936. Amherst students were attending classes in Powderly (10 miles NW) in the 1960s and it still appears on detailed TxDoT Lamar county maps.
No cemeteries are in the immediate vicinity and little additional information is available - unless we hear from someone.

Photographers note:
Quite a neat place to visit. There isnt much here from a historic perspective.
After leaving highway FM195 out from Paris all that there was to see were golf courses, and gated communities. That was almost all the way to where the Amherst old school was. It was kinda odd to see some farming going on (the truck with the hay bales on it). -

"'The Amherst Road' wasnt much more than a quaint lane going down through the countryside all very peaceable.
- Gerald Massey
