History in a Pecan Shell

The town was settled around artesian springs and was originally called Bluff Spring. The name change occurred with the granting of a post office in 1877.

Land owner Jack Glenn donated land to the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway when it built through the county in 1889.

The town reached its population zenith in 1936 when 680 persons called Bluff Dale home. The population declined to 500 by 1940 and went as low as 123 by 1980.

The decline has reversed and the 1990 population was over 300, and 123 in 2000.

My ancestors settled in this area. My grandfather was born in 1872 in Bluff Dale area. Great uncle E.B Dick Dennis was wounded by Indians. Some relatives are buried in Bluff Dale, some in Granbury.

I had the privilege of seeing what was the last herd of wild horses in the late 30s early 40s. - Wayne Dennis, December 07, 2009.
