History in a Pecan Shell

The community was established in the early 1890s. Although it was named for an early settler (Joseph Givins), the name was suggested by his son-in-law, Asbury Whitten. This defies the standard traditions in Texas of either naming a town after yourself, your girlfriend/ wife/ mistress or a railroad president / surveyor / engineer / payroll clerk.

By 1892 the town had acquired a post office and its first general store. The town�s growth was affected by its proximity to Paris and although its chances of being a rival were nil, it quietly went about life as a separate community, complete with its own cemetery.

The only population figure available comes from 1990 when 135 residents were counted.
