History in a Pecan Shell

The town is a misspelling of Loveless.

Three Confederate brothers with that surname arrived shortly after the Civil War. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas arrivied in 1885 built a spur on Loveless land. The name was misspelled on maps and so it has remained.

A church and school were built, and a post office was granted in 1893. The population of the Lovelace school in 1905 was thirty - but the overall population remained under 100. The post office closed in 1908 and during the Great Depression the population fell to 66. It dipped to just 50 during the early 1950s. The population for 2000 was twelve.

My brother and I were reminiscing about our childhood in and around Hillsboro, Texas. My brother went to second grade in 1938 in Lovelace, Texas. At that time, he recalls the school having six rows and each row was a different grade. There was one teacher. He was also remembering a town called Chatt. We had relatives that lived there. Don't think it is there anymore.

My brother is 81 years old and I am ten years younger, so we had different experiences growing up. Our mother's maiden name was Hill and somehow we were related to founder of Hillsboro.
