History in a Pecan Shell

The town evolved from a simple gristmill and store in the early 1880s. In the mid-1880s the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway platted the future town but decided to build through nearby Wylie (two miles SE of Parker) instead.

Despite the economic snub, Parker remained a viable farmer�s outlet. A post office opened in 1888 although it closed its doors just 13 years later. The tiny population of Parker was estimated at only 20 residents in 1960. Twenty years later it was nearing 1,100.

"Parker is primarily homes on acre or larger lots. There is no, or very little, retail or commercial property in town. About the only thing that catches your attention is Southfork Ranch of the Dallas TV show fame. The red brick building is the municipal building, but I think their storm shelter facilities are a little lacking. There was apparently an old farmhouse next door." - Mike Price, January 14, 2008
