History in a Pecan Shell

The region was settled in the late 1860s. A. J. Cross is credited with being the first settler and the Handbook of Texas lists Zeke Hall and Jim Beach as two other early pioneers. The town's namesake was John Sadler who donated a right-of-way to the Katy Railroad in the late 1870s. With a railroad connection and a depot, the area now had the nucleus to form a proper town. Sadler was granted a post office in 1892.

Population statistics showed about 400 residents from the 1920s into the mid-30s. The Great Depression, WWII and post war highway improvements lured residents away and by the mid 1950s the population was just short of 200. The figures on the 2006 state map show an estimated population of 404 - about the same as the mid-1920s.
