Mosquito Prairie, Texas. (original) (raw)

Long before Clute, Texas came up with their Mosquito Festival, this place was celebrating their natural resources in this tongue-in-cheek name. Texas is full of these names (like Grannys Neck, Lickskillet and Bug Tussle) and would probably be world famous for these rustic appellations had it not been for the restraint shown by the US postal authorities in D.C. when the applications for post offices came in. Were sure some of the suggested names caused clerks to pound on their desks, kick cuspidors downstairs or perhaps telegraph it to friends down the hall. But after the laughter subsided, they fell back to the unofficial post office approvers rule of: We cant let them use that.
