Sweet Home, Texas post office

History in a Pecan Shell

The Sweet Home Post Office was established in 1852. Just prior to the Civil War, George West had a hotel and store in Sweet Home. It's possible he found the name a little sentimental and maudlin, for when he had a chance to name a town later in life he chose a name that he could live with - George West.

Sweet Home was a wintering ground for the wagoneers who transported supplies on "the cotton road" between Alleyton and Brownsville during the Civil War.

In the 1870s the Czechs and Germans arrived. The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad came through in 1887, but missed the town by five miles. Many Sweet Homers moved to the railroad, but a few stayed.

Somewhere along the way, George West had time to investigate land down in Live Oak County and almost single handedly built the town of George West, paying for the electrical plant, the courthouse and most other amenities

Sweet Home still has two cemeteries, reflecting the move of years ago. The population in 1990 was 360.

The Sweet Home Music Fest is held each year on the second weekend of September downtown.
