Stephens County History

Created as Buchanan County January 22, 1858;
Organized September 20, 1860;
Name changed to Stephens December 17, 1861;
Named in honor of Alexander H. Stephens 1812-1883; Vice-President of the Confederate States;
Breckenridge, The County Seat.
