Cass, Texas, Cass County. (original) (raw)

History in a Pecan shell

Cass was settled when the Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway came through the county in the early 1890s has never enjoyed a population over 100 persons. Cass started life as Sheffield, Texas - perhaps in anticipation of a future in steel manufacturing. A post office opened in 1894 but the name was changed to Cass in 1896.

By 1914 the town had two stores, two gins, and reached it's peak of 100. In 1925 the population had dropped to 20, and the post office closed three years later. In 1964 the population was reported at forty, but there were no businesses reported. In 1983 Cass had a population of fifty.
