History in a Pecan Shell
A timeline of selected significant events:
1881: Lumberman Isaac Conroe establishes sawmill on Stewarts Creek.
1884: Post office granted as Conroe's Switch on the I-GN railroad.
1889: Population reaches 300, replaces Montgomery as county seat.
1891: Courthouse constructed.
1892: Population reaches 500.
1896: The weekly Conroe Courier was first published.
1900: Conroe becomes Montgomery County's largest town.
1901: Major fire destroys part of downtown.
1904: Incorporated with a population of about 1,000
1911: Another fire does extensive damage.
1914: Population reaches 1,374.
1921: Town finally buys its first fire engine.
1931: Population reaches 2,457. Oil is discovered seven miles from town -causing a boom
1933: Population reaches 5,000. Conroe's streets are paved.
1935: Crighton Theater constructed
1936: New Courthouse built. Population reaches 10,000.
1941: Population declines to 4,624.
1972: Population reaches 11,969.
1982: Population reaches 18,034.
1990: Population 27,675.
2000: Population 36,811.
