Douglas, Texas, Smith County. (original) (raw)

History in a Pecan Shell
The Old Mound Indian Trail, also known as the Jamestown-Tyler road, ran through (nearby) Douglas. The town never seems to have developed a distinct center. Most of Douglas existing history concerns its schools of which there were four in the 1930s. Douglas did have a cemetery but there are two shown on the detailed county map one beside the other about a mile from where Douglas once was. One cemetery is unnamed while the other is named Prospect.
Douglas entry in the Handbook of Texas states that in the mid 1960s, only an abandoned business, a church, and a number of dwellings [were] scattered along dirt roads south of State Highway 31.
Photographer's Note:
Douglas is, was, midway between Tyler and Kilgore on CR 26, below Highway 31. This sign is the only sign of Douglas that I could find. -
