History in a Pecan Shell

Originally settled in 1830 or earlier, in 1836 a man named Michael Costley platted the town on 800 acres centered on a square.

General Kelsey Harris Douglass, an early settler and businessman is the town�s namesake.

Douglass had a stagecoach inn and many essential businesses in the 1830s, including a brick kiln and a sawmill as well as a cotton gin.

A teachers' school was in operation for a brief two year period and in the late 1920s, the center of town was electrified. Douglass suffered two devastating fires, the first in 1943 and the second in the mid-1950s.

The population was given as 75 residents for the 1990 census and for 2000, the same figure was given.
