Friendship, AKA Friendship School, Texas, Upshur County. (original) (raw)

Friendship TX - Baptist Church

History in a Pecan Shell

Settled around 1900, it was first known as Friendship School. It did indeed have a school, as well as a church and a handful of houses.

No population figures are avail for the communitys early years, but the postwar school consolidations (with Gilmer schools) spelled doom to Friendship. It became a dispersed rural community with only a few houses and the church remaining. It is estimated that 25 residents still live in the area.

Photographers Note:
"Be advised that there are 10-Friendship towns in Texas and to make matters worse there are two in just one county, Smith County. This Friendship is located in Upshur County on FM-155, 4.25-miles northeast of Gilmer, 10-miles west of Ore City, 10-miles northwest of Diana, 15-miles south of Pittsburg." -
