History in a Pecan Shell

The community came into being in the 1860s and when a railroad switch was installed in 1887, the town was named after settler John Newsome.

In 1902 a post office was granted and twelve years later the population was estimated to be 450 people. Lumber and agriculture was the base of the town�s economy and Newsome�s future looked promising until it was hit by a tornado in 1919. By the mid 1920s the population was down to a mere 165, growing a bit to 200 by the onset of the Great Depression. By the late 1960s the population was 100 and the post office closed in the early 1970s. The population has continued to be given as 100 residents through the 2000 census.
