History in a Pecan Shell

Settled shortly before the Civil War, the community had a church and school by 1879 both were called Evergreen as was the community around the key buildings.

With the granting of a post office in 1891, the townfolk of Evergreen decided to honor J. M. Procilla (or Procella). The postal authorities granted the office under the misspelled Percilla, Texas - and it has remained that way until the present.

In 1896 there were twenty-five citizens of Percilla who attended three churches and bought food and necessities from two stores. By 1935 the population doubled to fifty. Percillans had increased to nearly 100 by the mid-70s but with the school and businesses gone it was termed "a dispersed rural community." A church cemetery and community center still operate - and the population is still listed as just short of 100.
