History in a Pecan Shell

Settlement dates tom the late 1830s. The discovery of iron ore produced an initial "rush" in 1860 and a later one in the early 1890s. Only with the arrival of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in 1902 was a town platted. Landowner Margaret L. Walker was a shoe-in for having the town named after her, but the name had been taken. In order to have their way, they spelled the name backward which satisfied the post office, the citizens and Margaret Walker.

The population was 50 by 1914 which increased fivefold by the mid 1930s. In 1990 the population was 266.
