History on an Envelope

Settled in 1850 by former Kentuckians, Vessey seems to have peaked around the turn of the 20th Century with a high-water mark of 100 residents counted in 1910. The community was granted a post office in 1899 which managed to stay open through 1930. Commercial interests consisted of a cotton gin and lumber processing but there is no evidence of a central district. Proximity to the county seat dashed hopes for growth.

In 1940 the population was counted as twenty and the 2000 census counted fourteen. Today, Vessey consists of scattered houses.
