History in a Pecan Shell

Photographers Notes:
"After having lunch in north Mount Pleasant, I started winding around the countryside just NW of town. I seemed to be finding places where there was supposed to be something but there wasnt. Then I saw the magnificent setting of the white church on the hill.

A rancher was eye-balling me, curious of my interest. I stopped and introduced myself. He related how his dad, about age 90, who lived right behind him, had gotten robbed the night before and how he had recently had 15 cows stolen not far from the intersection.

I cant imagine anybody stupid enough to get into this area to do any stealing - especially (as I already knew) since the rancher carrys a rifle in his truck.

He stated that until 1973 there had been a school right across the road from the church." -

West New Hope United Methodist Church

This congregation began in 1886 when the Methodist sanctuary in Tranquil (2 mi. E) was moved to this site. The land was donated by charter members E. J. and E. M. Killingsworth. In 1909, the building was razed to make room for a new structure that would better serve the needs of a growing membership. Over the years, the congregation has made its building available for use by other community churches. Several members of the fellowship have become ordained Methodist ministers.
