Alamo Museum, San Antonio Texas. (original) (raw)

San Antonio - Alamo Museum
The Alamo Museum is on the Alamo grounds, and was designed in mission style to harmonize with the Alamo. The museum was meant to display the historical relics and records of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, custodians of the Alamo, but a DRT Library is on the other side of the Alamo now with the records. The Alamo Museum is now known as the Alamo Museum Gift Shop, but should be called the Alamo Museum Wonderland. There are all kinds of items, including maps and books and reproductions and even Texas Bluebonnet seed packets for a buck. The wonderland itself is the spectacular Battle of the Alamo in miniature in the middle of the space, and every Texan MUST see it at least once in their lifetime, preferably more if you want to see it all. Every time I go I see something I missed, and the little kids keep crowding me out, but I learned I could get more respect when I wear my coonskin hat (purchased there of course).
The Alamo Museum is on the Alamo Grounds at Alamo Plaza and Houston Street. It is the building you enter after you leave the Alamo thru the rear door. Once again, do not pass it up. The website doesnt mention its history, so Ive written the DRT.

There were 2 Centennial projects at the Alamo...one was the construction of the Alamo Museum, and the other was the restoration of the Alamo.
From "Monuments Commemorating the Centenary of Texas Independence":
"Approximately 53,000ofafederalallocationof53,000 of a federal allocation of 53,000ofafederalallocationof75,000 for improvements to the Alamo was used to construct the museum and landscape the site. The balance was used to make repairs to the Alamo proper."

Author's Note: As you continue along the Centennial trail, it is pretty obvious that my best descriptions are the ones of the museums I have seen myself. So, if you have been to any of these, please tell us about it! Please email Sarah Reveley. - Sarah Reveley
