History in a Pecan Shell

Originally called Leona Settlement due to its proximity to the river of the same name, the community was formed shortly after the turn of the century. In 1908 a man named King opened the first store and the town was briefly called Kingsville. Of course the postal authorities turned down an application when it was submitted under that name for a post office. (Due to the larger Kingsville over by the coast).

The name Pivot was suggested but due to poor penmanship or a misreading in Washington, permission was granted for Divot.

The community got a cotton gin but the population was hovering around ten throughout the 1920s. By 1929 the community was just a school and scattered residences. After WWII the population had increased to 35, but the school merged with the district at Dilley.

The population was 28 in the early 1970s and by the mid 70s one of the towns two churches had been closed. Divot continues to appear on the state map.
