History in a Pecan Shell

Nopal came into being in the 1870s. Situated on the Frio River, the settlement seemed to have a slight advantage over other communities.

It acquires a post office in 1879 when it had an estimated population of 50 which may have reached 75 before the coming of the railroad. The International and Great Northern railroad built through La Salle County in the early 1880s and residents flocked to the tracks, seeking a business lifeline, transportation out, or to simply witness proof that the outside world existed.

The post office closed its doors in 1883 and although a school remained open after the turn of the century, Nopal (or Peru) joined the long list of communities killed off by the railroad.
