History in a Pecan Shell

Established as Marcelina in 1886 as a switch on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad. It took a few years for businesses to get going, but in 1900 the first store opened and the following year a cotton gin was built by A.H. Poth. The name was then charged to Poth and a depot was built in 1906.

By 1914 the population was 250 and the town had most essential businesses including a lumberyard and furniture store. By 1920 it had increased to 300 residents. After WWII the population had doubled to 600 and by the mid-1960s it had reached 1,119.

Although businesses have declined from 35 in 1965 to 13 in 1990, the population has continued to increase - a rarity for small town Texas.
