History in a Pecan ShellSebastian Schertz was proprietor of a general store here when the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway arrived in 1875. A post office called Cutoff (probably a railroad designation) was operating in 1884. In 1899 the name was changed to Schertz and the following year it reported an estimated population of 200.

In 1914 the town�s amenities included the grocery, a church, bank, hotel and cotton gin. From the 30s through the 50s the population stabilized at 350.

With the construction of I-35 growth accelerated and in 1964 there were 2,281 people calling Schertz home. By the late 1980s it had swollen to 7,576 residents and for the 1990 census it had reached 10,555. The city has since expanded into three counties:
