History in a Pecan Shell

The community dates from 1847 when the land was open range for cattle. Ranchers made up the human population until 1860s. A post office was granted in the mid 1850s. The population was a mere 145 until the late 1880s when this region received an influx of Polish and German immigrants. By the mid 1890s it had increased to 600 residents. For reasons unknown, Selma�s population declined just after the year 1900. The post office closed and mail was routed through Bracken after 1906.

Just prior to WWII, Selma had a population of 100. It wasn�t until 1980 that the population reached 240 residents.

With the phenomenal growth of I-35 between San Antonio and Austin, the population reached 788 for the 2000 census, and 5,540 in 2010.
