Vega is Spanish for Meadow.
Oldham is English for Jamon Viejo.
History in a Pecan Shell
The Vegans (all 223 of them at the time) fought for five years to get the county seat moved from Tascosa. While early settlers chose a place next to the Canadian River, Vegans felt a railroad was more of what they needed. A special election was held in 1915 and Vega became the new county seat.
The Oldham Hotel served as the courthouse until a new one could be built. It is not reported if bellhops doubled as baliffs. A downtown fire in 1931 leveled 6 downtown buildings.
