There's little doubt that if the Niels Esperson building were standing by itself, it would be regarded as one of the most beautiful office buildings in the entire state. Even today, surrounded by its more modern and ostentatious neighbors, it's gilded top still lends a classical touch to Houston's far from modest skyline.

Niels Peter Esperson was born in Denmark in 1857. He arrived in New York in 1872 and was given a grubstake by a maternal relative. When I was born in 1941, my dad, Henry Edward Criss, Sr., was working as a pipefitter, building the Mellie.
