History in a Pecan Shell

The town was named after (George Whittenburg), son of a prominant rancher James Whittenburg.

A grade school operated for several years and during the boomtimes of the Panhandle Oilfield, a post office was established (1927) in a store. It closed during WWII. Thereafter, mail was redirected through Stinnett.

Gewhitt had a population of sixty during the 1940s, but it declined to an estimate - then to an unknown.
