History in a Pecan Shell

Named for its view of the Houston Ship Channel, Channelview came into being after oil was discovered in the vicinity prior to 1920.

The first residents were refinery workers. A post office was opened in 1933.

In the late 1930s the school district served an area nearly 20 miles square. The history of Channelview has always been serving some aspect of the oil industry, be it barge rebuilding or refinery construction.

From a mere 50 residents in 1940, it grew to 700 by the end of that decade. In the mid 1970s it was well over 8,000 which has since increased to 38,289 by 2010.
