History in a Pecan Shell

The town dates all the way back to 1839 when David Huffman settled in the tall pines north of what would become Houston.

A post office was granted in 1888 and in the early 1900s the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway came through Huffman.

By 1914 the town had a population of 250. Huffman's population stayed under 100 from the 1940s through the 80s. Although little is left from Huffman's early years - there are a few vintage structures in the area. Overall, the town appears to be a modern suburb of a much larger city. A letter from a reader informed us that Huffman's main object of interest is an ancient Live Oak tree.
