History in a Pecan Shell

Seadrift got its post office in 1891. The name originated much earlier - perhaps named after the debris from the hurricanes that destroyed Indianola. In the mid-1890s its population was about 120 and things were pretty quiet until 1911. That year lots were sold with a bonus of 5 acres outside of town for each lot sold in town. Soon enough lots were sold to incorporate the town in 1912. By 1914 their were 1,250 people - almost the same number as there are today.

A severe hurricane in 1919 stopped rail service and many people left for greener and drier pastures. The prosperous times of the 1920s found Seadrift in an economic slump.

The population was a mere 320 in 1926 and it didn't break the 1,000 person mark until 1961. Vietnamese settled in the area in the 70s and 80s, enjoying the familiar occupation of fishing and the familiar coastal humidity of Vietnam.
