History in a Pecan Shell

Settled to some degree as early as the 1840s, there had been a small community called Mountain City prior to the Civil War. With the arrival of the railroad, people abandoned Mountain City and moved close around the depot. Things didn�t really get started until April Fool�s Day 1881 when land was donated around the I&GN depot for a proper townsite.

First known as Du Pre, the name was changed in 1887 to Buda

The town served Hays County as a shipping point for local dairies and ranches until the arrival of the Great Depression. The population declined from 600 in 1929 to just 300 in four years.

It remained a tranquil, self-contained community for decades until its charm attracted the attention of Austinites. The population for the 1990 census was nearly 1,800 which increased to 5,595 by 2007.
